Philippe JAROUSSKY
Contre-ténor

Philippe has had the pleasure of collaborating with all the major international baroque orchestras, making acclaimed appearances at the world's most prestigious festivals and concert halls.
His vast repertoire in the Baroque field ranges from the refinements of Monteverdi, Sances and Rossi to the virtuosity of Händel and Vivaldi. He is also a tireless pioneer, with significant contributions to the discovery or rediscovery of composers such as Caldara, Porpora, Steffani, Telemann and Johann Christian Bach.
Philippe constantly explores the very different world of French melody in the company of pianist Jérôme Ducros and, more recently, guitarist Thibaut Garcia.
Passionate about contemporary music, he has premiered a cycle of melodies written by Marc-André Dalbavie based on sonnets by Louise Labbé. In June 2024, he took part in the premiere of the opera Mélancolie de la Résistance by the same composer at the Staatsoper in Berlin. He also premiered the opera written for him by Kaija Saariaho, Only the sound remains, at the Amsterdam Opera and the Paris Opera.
During the 2019/2020 season, Philippe Jaroussky celebrated his 20-year career with major events such as the addition of his statue to the Musée Grévin in Paris, the publication of a biographical book entitled Seule la musique compte (Only Music Matters) and, finally, the anthology album Passion Philippe Jaroussky.
In June 2025, a grand gala at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées celebrated his 25-year career. During the same season, an extensive tour with L'Arpeggiata marked his 15 years of collaboration with this ensemble. Also noteworthy is the production Hotel Metamorphosis, a pasticcio based on Vivaldi, in which he appeared as a soloist alongside Cecilia Bartoli, directed by Barrie Kosky at the Salzburg Festival.
In 2002, he founded the Ensemble Artaserse, with which he now performs worldwide and has recorded many albums.
In March 2021, Philippe Jaroussky made his conducting debut with Artaserse in Scarlatti's oratorio Il Primo Omicidio, a programme performed at the Salzburg Festival and the Montpellier Opera, among others. The latter became the residence of Philippe and Artaserse for three seasons.
This new conducting career quickly took off, with numerous concerts in Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, Budapest, and at the Épau and Halle festivals. During the 2021/2022 season, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and then at the Montpellier Opera, he conducted his first opera in the pit, with Händel's Giulio Cesare. In 2023, he will conduct a second stage production in Montpellier with Sartorio's rare Orfeo, which will then be performed throughout France.
In 2025, he will take a new step forward by conducting Mozart's Mitridate, first in concert version with the Cappella Cracoviensis and then again in Montpellier, in the pit, this time with the Orchestre National de Montpellier-Occitanie.
2025/26 preserves this immense artistic openness: concerts in Japan with Thibaut Garcia, a tour with Artaserse and Philippe as conductor in Händel's Alcina (Paris, Barcelona, Montpellier, Madrid), another tour also with Artaserse where he sings and conducts Italian cantatas (Paris, Berlin, Vancouver, Quebec, Boston, etc.); the alto part in Mozart's Requiem and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater in Salzburg with Christina Pluhar conducting; Händel's Aci, Galatea e Polifemo at Zurich Opera House, where he conducts La Scintilla.
Within his formidable discography, particular attention should be paid to his collaborations with Jean-Christophe Spinosi and the Ensemble Matheus as part of the renowned Vivaldi Edition on the Naïve label.
Philippe Jaroussky has been an exclusive artist with Erato-Warner Classics for many years, winning numerous awards for his recordings, notably with the Ensemble Artaserse.
Since 2017, the Académie Philippe Jaroussky has been working to support young musicians from culturally disadvantaged backgrounds with an original, supportive and demanding teaching programme, occupying an important place in the musical landscape.
In 2019, Philippe was made an Officer of Arts and Letters by the French government.
