Denis PASCAL

Piano

Denis Pascal gives us a Schubert who is dominated, controlled and irreproachable to the letter. One can feel an in-depth work on the scores. The ultimate Sonata D 960 unfolds with finesse, a constant meticulousness in the implementation of nuances, phrasing, and modes of attack. The manner of timbre testifies to the same subtlety. The trills do not dig abysses: everything flows with an astonishing serenity, the word that best suits the French pianist's Schubert.
DIAPASON
Denis Pascal has established himself as one of the most original figures in French piano music, performing in France and throughout the world as a soloist as well as a chamber musician. His career has developed abroad, with numerous appearances in Europe, of course, but also in the United States (Lincoln Center and Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, Herbst Theater in San Francisco) and in Asia (Arts Center in Seoul, Yokohama Festival with the New Japan Philharmonic). In France, he has won over audiences in most Parisian venues (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Châtelet, Philharmonie, Maison de la Radio, Théâtre de la Ville, Salle Gaveau, Opéra Garnier), as well as in many international festivals (Folle Journée de Nantes, Festivals of Salon-de-Provence, La Roque d'Anthéron, Aix-en-Provence, Lisztomania, Festival de Radio France Montpellier Occitanie, Festival Berlioz, Nohant Festival Chopin).
Concerned with maintaining a historical awareness of the repertoire, Denis Pascal gives concerts that are both memorable and open to all, rigorously applying a constant ethic to the Lisztian repertoire as well as to impressionist music and post-Romantic scores. His collaboration with François-Xavier Roth's orchestra Les Siècles on the two Chopin concertos has renewed our vision of the sonorities of these emblematic works, resulting in a landmark recording for the Polymnie label.

Denis Pascal's discography reflects his musical commitments. For example, he has recorded the complete Hungarian Rhapsodies by Franz Liszt, whose colouristic science and above all expressive force have been unanimously acclaimed by the musical press, with a CHOC from Le Monde de la Musique, the Prix de l'Association Française Franz Liszt, and the Classica Recommendation. Among the discographic projects that have received enormous critical acclaim, a perfect illustration of Denis Pascal's immense curiosity is a disc devoted to Jean Wiener for Sisyphe, which received a Diapason d'Or. This recording, completed with new pieces, will be reissued on the La Música label in 2023. The Académie Charles Cros awarded Denis Pascal and the clarinettist Jérôme Comte in the category of Instrumental Soloist for their recording of Berg and Brahms.

Denis Pascal has also recorded for the label La Música the first album of a Schubert triptych published in March 2018. He recorded for the same label "Ravel à Gaveau" alongside Aurélien Pascal, Svetlin Roussev and David Lively. Also for Música, the second volume devoted to Schubert was released, and in December 2022 Denis Pascal's last recording devoted to Satie. This recording was unanimously acclaimed by the critics, receiving a CHOC from Classica, and TTTT from Telerama.

With his two sons Alexandre (violin) and Aurélien Pascal (cello), they form the Pascal Trio. In March 2021, their first CD, devoted to Schubert's trios, was released by La Música to critical acclaim. The Pascal Trio quickly gained fame, and Denis and his two sons regularly performed together in many renowned venues and festivals.

A disciple of Pierre Sancan, Denis Pascal studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Jacques Rouvier, Léon Fleisher and György Sándor. Denis Pascal perfected his skills with György Sebök, of whom he was one of the main disciples, at Indiana University in Bloomington. He then toured regularly with the great cellist János Starker. A unanimously appreciated pedagogue, he was appointed professor at the CNSM in Lyon in January 2010, then in April 2011 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
