Carlo VISTOLI
Countertenor

characters he embodies.
Carlo Vistoli has conquered the world's greatest stages: La Scala in Milan, Rome Opera, La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Fiorentino in Florence, Teatro Regio in Turin, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Philharmonie de Paris, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and Theater an der Wien, Berlin State Opera and Philharmonie, Auditorio nacional in Madrid, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salzburg Festival, San Francisco Opera, etc.
He has sung under the baton of the greatest conductors, such as William Christie, Philippe Jaroussky, Emmanuelle Haïm, Giovanni Antonini, Ottavio Dantone, Gianluca Capuano, Andrea Marcon, Thibault Noally, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Marc Minkowski, Raphaël Pichon, Diego Fasolis, John Eliot Gardiner, and Christopher Moulds, in productions by Damiano Michieletto, Robert Carsen, Oliver Mears, Barrie Kosky, Davide Livermore, Jan Lauwers, Christopher Alden, and others.
Through these prestigious collaborations, he has established himself as a true authority on famous works, while also doing justice to lesser-known scores. The giants Handel and Vivaldi naturally occupy a central place in his repertoire. For Handel, he magnificently performed the title roles in Rinaldo (Lausanne, Paris and Madrid) and Giulio Cesare (which he sang with Cecilia Bartoli in Monaco and Vienna), Ruggiero in Alcina (in Florence with Cecilia Bartoli again, then in Rome), Arsace in Partenope (San Francisco), not to mention Athamas in Semele (Berlin, Rome, Paris and London). He performs with equal talent in major oratorios such as The Messiah (Madrid, Barcelona, London, Paris) and Il Trionfo del Tempo (Moscow and Paris). In Vivaldi, he made a lasting impression in Orlando furioso with his performances in both the title role (Paris) and that of Ruggiero (Venice). We should also mention his participation in the recording (Erato-Warner Classic) and subsequent tour of Hasse's Serpentes Ignei in Deserto with Les Accents (Berlin, Madrid). His masterful artistry with text is ideally suited to 17th-century Italian music. In Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, he played both Ottone (Salzburg) and Nerone (Berlin). His spectacular performances as Angelo Custode in Cavalieri's La Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo (Vienna) and Alidoro in Cesti's L'Orontea (Milan) were unanimously praised by critics.
In his later repertoire, in addition to a magnificent Farnace in Mozart's Mitridate in Berlin, Carlo Vistoli has forged a special bond with the title role in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, which he has sung in two major productions (Damiano Michieletto in Berlin and Robert Carsen in Rome and Valencia). Carlo has also sung Rossini's Petite Messe solennelle (Paris) to great acclaim. Contemporary works are becoming increasingly important in his repertoire: Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici (Venice) and, more recently, Filidei's Il Nome della Rosa (Milan).
The 2025/2026 season confirms Carlo Vistoli's international stature. Highlights include Handel's Il Trionfo del Tempo with Thibault Noally and Les Accents at the Opéra du Rhin, then with Giovanni Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico at Bozar; Alcina in concert version with Philippe Jaroussky conducting the Ensemble Artaserse (Paris, Madrid, Barcelona); an extensive tour with Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d'Astrée in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater; Vivaldi's Tamerlano (title role, concert version) with Les Accents (Paris); revival of Giulio Cesare with Cecilia Bartoli at the Zurich Opera House; and above all, his first foray into Rossini in a stage production in Rome in the title role of Tancredi.
Carlo Vistoli has already built up an impressive discography for several labels, including Harmonia mundi, Brilliant classics, Tactus, Arcana, La Música and Bongiovanni.
His latest album, Sacro furore, was released by Harmonia Mundi, featuring the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and dedicated to Vivaldi's sacred music, a programme that has been performed in concert in Paris, Berlin, Lausanne and Lisbon.
