L'ARPEGGIATA

Christina Pluhar

With L'Arpeggiata, baroque music makes a remarkable entrance in the 21st century: fine, refined, noble, voluptuous, fiery, dazzling! A lively look back to the past to move forward.

Taking the name of a toccata by the Italian-born German composer Girolamo Kapsberger, Christina Pluhar set the tone that would preside over the destiny of L'Arpeggiata, the vocal and instrumental ensemble she founded in 2000.

L'Arpeggiata brings together artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds, established on both sides of Europe and the world, around programmes and projects eruditely concocted by Christina Pluhar on the basis of her musicological research, her encounters, the curiosity that drives her and her immeasurable talent. The ensemble's sound, built around plucked strings, is immediatly recognisable.

From inception, L'Arpeggiata's vocation has been to explore the rich music of the little-known repertoire of Roman, Neapolitan and Spanish composers of the early Baroque. The ensemble's guiding principles are instrumental improvisation and research into the instrumentarium in the purest Baroque tradition, as well as the creation and staging of 'event' performances. In this way, it encourages the encounter of music and song with other Baroque disciplines that were inseparable in their time, such as dance and theatre, and opens up to a variety of musical genres, including jazz and traditional music.

A veritable invitation to dream, l'Arpeggiata's programmes return to the surprising and the unexpected, restoring Baroque to its original meaning: an irregularly shaped pearl (16th century), a surprising element (18th century). The works of the Baroque period provide L'Arpeggiata with a haven of freedom where artists from near and far can flourish, where genres and traditions mingle, making each concert a unique encounter.

L'Arpeggiata regularly collaborates with outstanding soloists from the worlds of Baroque art music (Philippe Jaroussky, Céline Scheen, Valer Sabadus, Nuria Rial, Céline Scheen, Raquel Andueza, Luciana Mancini, Véronique Gens, Stéphanie d'Oustrac, Cyril Auvity, Emiliano Gonzalez-Toro, Dominique Visse, João Fernandes... ) as well as traditional music (Vincenzo Capezzuto, Ensemble 'Barbara Furtuna', Mísia...) or other genres, such as jazz or flamenco (Gianluigi Trovesi, Pepe Habichuela, Wolfgang Muthspiel). Since its creation, the ensemble has performed at some of Europe's greatest festivals and in the most prestigious venues (Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Wigmore Hall London, Tonhalle Zürich, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Festival de Saint-Denis, Festival de Sablé sur Sarthe), Utrecht Oude Muziek, Festival d'Ambronay, Festival de Musique Baroque de Pontoise, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Ruhrtriennale, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Opéra de Bordeaux, Vredenburg Center Utrecht, Philharmonie Köln... ) throughout the world (Carnegie Hall New York, Sydney City Recital Hall, Brisbane Festival, Festival International Cervantino de Guanajuato, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, Karura Hall...). L'Arpeggiata has been in residence at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Festival de Saint-Denis and the Théâtre de Poissy, Wingmore Hall in London and the Teatro Mayor in Bogotà, Colombia, for the premiere of the five-act opera Orfeo Chamane, directed by Rolf and Heidi Abderhalden.

In 2011, l'Arpeggiata premiered Giovanni Andrea Bontempi's little-known opera Il Paride (1662) at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, directed by Christoph von Bernuth. This work was presented again in August 2012 at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik.

In France and abroad, Arpeggiata's discography has been unanimously and consistently acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. The ensemble records an album a year and regularly wins prestigious prizes. Winner in 2009, 2010 and 2011 of the Echo Klassik Preis in Germany, in 2009 of the Edison Price in Holland, in 2008 of the VSCD Muziekprijs, l'Arpeggiata has regularly been rewarded for its rich discography, since its albums with Alpha ("La Villanella", "Homo fugit velut umbra", "La Tarantella", "All'Improvviso", "Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo"), then Naïve ("Los Impossibles") until his collaboration with EMI/Virgin classics, now Warner/Erato ("Teatro d'Amore", "Via Crucis", "Monteverdi Vespro della Beata Vergine "Los Pájaros perdidos", "Mediterraneo", "Music for a while - improvisations on Henry Purcell", "L'Amore innamorato", "Händel goes wild") with "10 de Classica Répertoire", Cannes Classical Awards, "Timbre de platine" d'Opéra international, "Disque du Mois" BBC Magazine, "Prix Exellentia Pizzicato", ffff Télérama, Coup de cœur Musique baroque de l'Académie Charles Cros ...

The albums ‘Himmelsmusik' and 'La Lyra d'Orfeo', and 'Passacalle de la Follie', released in 2018, 2019 and 2023 by Warner/Erato, saw a renewed collaboration with Philippe Jaroussky, and the albums 'Alla Napoletana' and 'Wonder Women', released in 2022 and 2024 by Warner/Erato, saw a renewed collaboration with Céline Scheen, Luciana Mancini and Vincenzo Capezzuto.

Released in March 2011, the film « Tous les soleils », directed by writer Philippe Claudel, was inspired by the music on the album La Tarantella. For the occasion, two tracks from the album were re-recorded with the voice of lead actor Stefano Accorsi.

L'Arpeggiata is a member of FEVIS (Fédération des Ensembles Vocaux et Instrumentaux Spécialisés) and PROFEDIM (Syndicat Professionnel des Producteurs, Festivals, Ensembles, Diffuseurs Indépendants de Musique).
