Christophe DUMAUX
Countertenor

Christophe Dumaux needs no introduction : he is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after singers in the world. With his exceptional vocal talent, the intensity of his singing matched by his unique stage presence, he is a regular guest on the world's major opera stages.
In 2001, Christophe burst onto the opera scene as Eustazio in Händel's Rinaldo, conducted by René Jacobs at the Radio France and Montpellier Festival. The production was revived at the Innsbruck Festival and the Berlin State Opera, with a recording by Harmonia mundi. Since this thunderous debut, his career has been firmly established in the world's leading musical venues: the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Opéra de Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Theater an der Wien, the Chicago Opera, the Salzburg and Glyndebourne Festivals, the BBC Proms, etc.
Similarly, the list of conductors with whom he has collaborated includes some of the most prestigious names: alongside René Jacobs are William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Gianluca Capuano, Giovanni Antonini, Harry Bicket, Andrea Marcon, Ivor Bolton, Philippe Jaroussky, Ottavio Dantone, Francesco Corti, etc., with ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Artaserse, La Cetra, the Freiburger Barockorchester, The Academy of Ancient Music, Le Concert d'Astrée, and others.
Christophe Dumaux also sings with major symphony orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Most recently, he performed The Messiah with the Orchestre Métropolitain and its musical director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, at the Maison Symphonique in Montreal.
Among the directors with whom he has established regular collaborations are all the big names: Claus Guth, David McVicar, Robert Carsen, Calixto Bieito, Barrie Kosky, David Alden, Christof Loy, Barbora Horáková, Dmitry Tcherniakov and Richard Jones.
With them, he tackles masterpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, from Monteverdi to Mozart, not forgetting, of course, Händel, undoubtedly one of the geniuses he has served most extensively.
Christophe Dumaux sang Ottone in Agrippina in Hamburg; the title role in Orlando at the Theater an der Wien and the Teatro Real in Madrid; Polinesso in Ariodante at the Vienna State Opera, in Salzburg, at the Bolshoi Theatre, the Opéra Garnier in Paris and the Opéra du Rhin; Athamas in Semele, Arsamene in Serse and then Nerone in Agrippina at the Zurich Opera.
Christophe has a special connection with the opera Giulio Cesare: after singing the role of Tolomeo all over the world, he has now established himself as an exceptional interpreter of the title role – last season in Amsterdam and this summer at the Salzburg Festival. In the same role, he took part in a major tour of the United States and Europe with Harry Bicket and The English Concert (recording to be released).
He has tackled other Baroque masters such as Vivaldi (Melindo in La Verità in cimento in Zurich; the title role in Il Giustino in Berlin) and Cavalli (the title role in Il Giasone in Antwerp and Endimione in La Calisto in Milan) with equal success.
In 2014, Christophe Dumaux took on his first Mozart role as Farnace in Mitridate at the Drottningholm Opera in Sweden, a role he reprised with Emmanuelle Haïm at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
In 2024, he made his acclaimed debut in the title role of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at the Sydney Opera House.
The 2025/2026 season is packed with prestigious appearances: Christophe reprises the role of Polinesso three times (Paris Opera with Raphaël Pichon, directed by Robert Carsen; Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London with Stefano Montanari, directed by Jestke Minjssen; concert version with Andrea Marcon in Vienna,
Basel, Madrid and Paris). With René Jacobs, he sings Händel's Tamerlano (title role) at the Karlsruhe Handel Festival, then Il Giustino on tour (Valencia, Madrid, Antwerp and Freiburg).
His discography includes Bach cantatas and passions with the Ensemble Pulcinella (Ambroisie-Naïve) and Pergolesi's oratorio Septum verbe a Christo with René Jacobs (Harmonia mundi). On DVD, no fewer than three recordings immortalise his portrayals of Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare (Glyndebourne with William Christie and David McVicar for Opus Arte; Theater an der Wien with Ivor Bolton and Keith Warner for Unitel; Salzburg with Giovanni Antonini and the duo Moshe Leiser/Patrice Caurier for Decca). Il Giasone, recorded in Antwerp for Dynamic, is also available.
