LA CHIMERA

Eduardo Egüez

There are rare moments in life when art touches the depths of people, beauty and grace. This was the case during the concert of La Chimera.
L'ECHO
The viola da gamba consort La Chimera was founded in 2001 by Sabina Colonna Preti and since its meeting with Eduardo Egüez it has immediately taken on new forms and spread its wings. While retaining its characteristic sound as a viol ensemble, La Chimera has become a variable-geometry ensemble made up of internationally renowned artists, whose activity is focused on the creation of original projects, with a particular interest in the links between the ancient and modern worlds.

Numerous achievements have been made in recent years: Buenos Aires Madrigal (Italian madrigals from the 17th century and Argentine tangos), which was recorded on CD and was a great success in Europe, Tonos y Tonadas, which mixed musical and literary elements from the Spanish Baroque with contemporary Latin American folklore, La Voce di Orfeo, based on the famous tenor Francesco Rasi, to whom Monteverdi entrusted the role of Orpheus, and which won numerous prizes, and Odisea Negra, which combined the music of African griots, ancient music from Cuba and Peru, and contemporary Central American folklore.

The South American baroque repertoire itself is also strongly represented by La Chimera, with programmes such as Mexican Splendours, and Gaspar Fernandez's El Cancionerio Musical, both of which were enthusiastically received by audiences.

In 2014, the Misa de Indios - Misa Criolla programme marked the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the famous mass by the Argentine Ramirez, presented alongside works from the South American colonial baroque and compositions by Eduardo Egüez; recorded by the French label La Música, this project has met with phenomenal public success since its inception, with more than 100 concerts given in France and Europe and more than 10,000 records sold.

The album Gracias a la Vida (2018), named after the famous song by the Chilean composer Violeta Parra, explores the baroque music of the Jesuit missions in relation to South American folklore; Fuga y Misterio (2020) mirrors the art of counterpoint in Bach and Piazzola, with the help of Italian percussionist Simone Rubino. La Chimera's Dowland, Lachrimæ (2021) features the only viol consort in a purely Baroque programme of John Dowland's Lachrimæ, accompanied by tenor Zachary Wilder. In 2022, Iguazú, exploring the ancient and modern music of southern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, was released as the final part of La Chimera's triptych devoted to South American music.
